Simon Kemp is the Facility Leader for Mineralogy, Petrology and Biostratigraphy in BGS including techniques such as X-ray diffraction, clay mineralogy, surface area, thermal analysis, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron microanalysis, thin section production, autoradiography, industrial minerals, biostratigraphical preparation and analysis. Related research interests include improved methods of mineral quantification using X-ray diffraction analysis, Rietveld software and spray drying techniques. Recent volcanic-related work has included analysis of dust content and respirable silica from Montserrat and quantitative XRD to look at the composition of potable water and respirable silica content from Nyiragongo volcano, Goma, Congo.
